2016 Drama Solo Performance and Theatre Studies Stagecraft Examinations

The 2016 Drama Solo Performance and Theatre Studies Stagecraft examinations have just been published by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

Drama Solo Performance Examination

This year’s Drama solo performance exam is an eclectic mix of characters from a range of stimuli. These stimuli include:

  • a poem
  • a novel
  • a play
  • a traditional Japanese ghost story
  • board games
  • a real event
  • a podcast
  • a television series
  • a musical
  • the Statue of Liberty

All characters are prescribed the broad performance style of non-naturalism. Additional performance styles include:

  • vaudeville
  • surrealism
  • Japanese horror
  • epic theatre
  • physical theatre
  • comedy

Selected conventions on this year’s solo performance exam include:

  • heightened use of language and movement
  • caricature
  • puppetry
  • exaggerated movement
  • actor as chorus
  • mime
  • stillness and silence
  • song
  • satire
  • pathos

Theatre Studies Stagecraft Examination

This year’s Theatre Studies Stagecraft exam offers a variety of monologue choices for students to show their skills in either acting and direction or design:

  • Diana Morales from A Chorus Line
  • Thomasina from Arcadia by Tom Stoppard
  • Margaret from On The Wallaby by Nick Enright
  • Madame Arcati from Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward
  • Sylvia from Sylvia by A.R. Gurney
  • Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
  • Man from The Drowsy Chaperone
  • Bernard from Arcadia by Tom Stoppard
  • Horrocks from Children of the Black Skirt by Angela Betzien
  • Phaeton from Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman
  • Oberon from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
  • Melon Thief from The Melon Thief by Uri Nusubito
  • Tiresias from The Burial at Thebes by Seamus Heaney
