Melbourne newspaper The Age reported this morning that Australia Council figures from a survey of its Major Performing Arts Group reveal a 4% decline in theatre attendance in Australia in 2012, from that of the previous year.
The big winner was opera, showing a staggering 34% growth in paid attendance last year. The country’s national opera company, Opera Australia, enjoyed a 40% attendance increase in 2012.
Despite the decline, theatre in Australia retained the highest attendance figures by art form with 922,000 tickets sold last year.
