Geoffrey Rush Wins Tony Award

Australian actor Geoffrey Rush has this morning won a Tony Award for his portrayal of King Berenger in Eugene Ionesco’s play Exit The King on Broadway.

Rush stunned Melbourne and Sydney audiences in 2007 with his performance of the absurdist king who refuses to die. A co-production between Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre and Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre, Exit The King was directed by Rush’s friend and long time collaborator Neil Armfield.

The production was taken to Broadway earlier this year, with Rush receiving rave reviews. Today, Geoffrey Rush has walked away with the coveted 2009 Tony Award for Best Performance By A Leading Actor in A Play.

Rush had stiff competition in the Best Actor category, holding off Sopranos star James Gandolfini, among others.

As expected, Billy Elliot scooped the pool this year, winning 9 Tony’s, including Best Musical. Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage won the Tony for Best Play.
