Memphis To Be Shown In Cinemas

memphis-musicalMemphis, the 1950s-set winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical, will soon be shown in American movie theatres.

The show about one of the first white DJs to play black music on American radio is currently being filmed in high definition over several performances for a (US) spring release at the cinemas. The producers of the show are using the event to market the musical for an upcoming national tour starting in October.

It is rare for a stage musical to be filmed for showing in movie theatres. Memphis opened on Broadway in October 2009 and to date has had over 500 performances.

Not that I know of Michael. Though it would be great to see “Memphis” in cinemas in Australia, yeah? The only instance I am aware where a Broadway stage show was filmed for the movies/DVD in recent years was “Will Ferrell: You’re Welcome America – A Final Night With George W. Bush”. I found this a great way to see a Broadway show if you happen to live 16,680 km from the source (yep, I calculated the distance between Melbourne and New York!).

Any word if we will see it in Australia?
