Musical Theatre Charades!
Welcome to a browser-based musical theatre charades game for the Drama and Theatre Arts classroom! Below, I have created an interactive charades game where a button is pressed to revel a clue belonging to a given musical theatre category. As soon as the clue is revealed, a 90-second timer instantly starts counting down to zero underneath the clue button. Students have to guess the clue in the allotted time.
The musical theatre categories for this charades game are: Show, Character, Song, Prop, Setting, Lyric, and Dialogue.
Pedagogy
This charades game belongs to the pedagogical framework known as gamification. In other words, it’s guaranteed to be fun!
Objective
The goal of charades is for a team to correctly guess a word or phrase based on non-verbal clues provided by one of their team members acting it out within a specified time limit.
Basic Rules
Choosing the Word/Phrase: One player from the acting team presses the clue button below. They should not reveal the clue to their team.
No Speaking or Sounds: The player acting out the clue must remain completely silent. No verbal clues, sounds, or mouthing of words are allowed.
Time Limit: The team has a set time of 90 seconds to guess the clue. Watch the timer below the clue button.
Acting Rules: Only physical gestures, body movements, and facial expressions may be used to convey the meaning.
Pointing to objects in the room or using props is generally not allowed unless explicitly permitted by house rules.
Gestures and Conventions
Certain universally understood gestures can be used to aid communication:
Number of Words: Hold up fingers to indicate the number of words in the phrase.
Word Order: Hold up a specific number of fingers to indicate which word you are acting out.
Sounds Like: Tug your ear to indicate “sounds like” to suggest rhyming or similar-sounding words.
Category Hints: Use predefined gestures for the various categories listed at the top of this post, so the people guessing know in advance.
Syllables: Tap your arm or hold up fingers to indicate the number of syllables.
Scoring
Successful Guess: If the team correctly guesses the word or phrase within the time limit, they score a point.
Turn Ends: If the team does not guess correctly within the time limit, no points are awarded, and another other team takes their turn.
Winning The game continues for a predetermined number of rounds or until a team reaches a set number of points. The team with the most points wins!
Variations
Prop Usage: In some variations, players are allowed to use simple props to enhance their performance.
Reverse Charades: Instead of one person acting for their team, the entire team acts out the clue while one person guesses.
