We’ve been a little spoiled for musical blockbusters down here in Melbourne in recent times. With Wicked, Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, Avenue Q, West Side Story, Hairspray, Mary Poppins and soon Rock of Ages and The Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies, Melbourne has been awash with big shows.
Most pleasing is the fact that some of these shows are traveling further than just Melbourne and Sydney, allowing folks in other capital cities to see them.
Wicked appears to have gone from Melbourne to Sydney and now to Brisbane. The good news is, the show is also visiting Adelaide and Perth. When it first arrived in Melbourne in July 2008, I could have bet my house that the biggest musical in the world would only show in Melbourne and Sydney. How wrong I was!
In April, Mary Poppins will move from Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. Has anyone heard any whispers about other capital cities getting Mary Poppins as well?
Meanwhile, Hairspray continues its highly successful run in Melbourne. Has Hairspray got a confirmed starting date for Sydney yet? Any rumours of it going to other cities?
