VCE Drama and Theatre Studies Top Scorers 2017
For local readers of The Drama Teacher, the top scoring students for two senior subjects in the Victorian Curriculum of Education, Drama and Theatre Studies, have now been published. Study scores represent a ranking for each student compared to all other students undertaking that subject in the final year of secondary school, with a maximum score of 50. Scores of 40 and above are published in each study, subject to students’ prior permission for media publication.
Only about 2% of students in a given study receive a score of 45 or above and any score of 40 or higher is better than about 91% of that subject’s cohort.
In VCE Drama Units 3 and 4, a total of 91 students received a study score of 40 or above. This year, three students were awarded a perfect study score of 50, only one student received a 49, and three students were awarded a score of 48. To give an indication of how difficult it is to do exceptionally well, only 20 students were awarded a study score of 45 or above for Drama this year. Half of the 40+ study scores for Drama derived from students at Independent schools, with an even split of the other half being from Catholic and Government schools.
In the sister subject, VCE Theatre Studies Units 3 and 4 (which traditionally has a slightly lower enrolment than Drama), the numbers are almost identical. A total of 90 students received a study score of 40 or above. This year, two students were awarded a perfect study score of 50, only one student received a 49, and three students were awarded a score of 48. Only 19 students were awarded a study score of 45 or above. A little over half of the 40+ study scores for Theatre Studies derived from students at Independent schools (marginally more than Drama), with the remainder of students being mostly from Catholic schools, with a handful of students from Government schools. It should be noted a number of Independent schools run VCE Theatre Studies as opposed to Drama, so this may be why their student numbers are well represented in this subject’s top scorers.
Congratulations to all students who received a 40+ study score for Drama and/or Theatre Studies and a big shout out to all their teachers who worked so hard educating and guiding their students throughout the year.
