Party Quirks is one of the most popular Theatresports games. Usually played in teams of four, one player takes on the role of a party host. Their job is to look after the guests, one by one, as they enter the party. It is always fun to have another student “ring” the doorbell from the audience at random intervals by making the sound effect of the party doorbell. The other three players on the team are the party guests.
Each guest is given a quirk with which to enter the party portraying. The host is not to know the particular quirk each party guest has. During the course of the improvisation/party, the host attempts to guess the quirks of each party guest, all the while remaining in character. As each guest’s quirk is guessed by the host (it does not need to be exact, close enough is good enough), they find a legitimate (made-up) reason to exit the party. The game ends when the host has successfully guessed all the party guests’ quirks.
Students often find the title of this game confusing, mainly because they know what a party is, but not everyone is sure what a quirk is. A quirk is a personality trait, habit, or affliction (e.g. a twitch). They are often unusual or peculiar in nature and are sometimes referred to as idiosyncracies because they help define a character. Ultimately, this is the reason why Drama students play the game Party Quirks, because at its heart is the notion of qualities that are unique from one character to the next.

Party Quirks can involve characters with quirks that are physical (silly walks, fast-talking speech, uses a lot of hand gestures when talking), behavioural (must count all objects seen in the room, secretly talks to themself at parties), habitual (is obsessed with fixing other people’s attire, always says the wrong thing, has an annoying habit of correcting other people’s grammar) or personality based (is suspicious of other people, believes that are a lost member of a boy band, is convinced they have arrived at the party from another dimension). Of course, these party quirks can involve costumes and props if you want, but props at the party (such as drinks, food etc) can easily be mimed by the players.
