Best Of New York Theatre 2010: Charles Isherwood
The New York Times Theatre Critic, Charles Isherwood, gives us his Top 10 shows in New York for 2010. More positive of the state of American theatre than Chief NYT Critic Ben Brantley, Isherwood focuses on the strength of new American playwriting and Off-Broadway shows, in particular.
On top of Isherwood’s list is American playwright Annie Baker’s new work, The Aliens, itself an Off-Broadway show, premiering at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre back in April. Isherwood describes The Aliens as a “comedy-drama about love and loss among misfit youth”.
Scarce among both Isherwood and Brantley’s Top 10 lists were new musicals. Both critics had just two musicals on their list: Brantley including Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Isherwood including Green Day’s American Idiot.
